This CD is devoted entirely to Joan Pau Pujol (Mataró 1593 - Barcelona 1626), master of Barcelona Cathedral and European-style composer. Pujol was able to combine the great polyphonic tradition of 16th century Spain with new baroque styles from Italy. The selected repertoire includes samples of the three styles used at that time: liturgical music, in Latin, Romance language songs and music for the Liturgy of the Hours (Vespers, Complines, etc.) The latest, synthesis of the two previously mentioned styles incorporate elements of the profane music, even if sung on Latin texts.
