Gerhard: Tonades dels segles XVII i XVIII

The musical nationalism fostered by Felip Pedrell was firmly based on both folklore and music from earlier periods. Thus, for Pedrell, a 16th century madrigal or a tune from the 17th century could be as valid and genuine as a source of inspiration as any truly popular melody. In this sense, the influence of Pedrell on his disciples was instrumental in creating a language that aspired to be a tradition-rooted musical language in its own right. One such disciple, Robert Gerhard, loyally observed such an approach, and particularly so in his youth. The result of this is the present collection of pieces for voice and piano based on melodies by Palomino, Valderrábano, Salinas, Berxés, Literes, Correa, Grimau, Marin, Laserna, Navas, Ferrer and Galvan which have been recorded for the first time by two prestigious and internationally acclaimed artists, mezzo Nancy Fabiola Herrera and pianist Mac McClure.
